As Brother Tex and I were serving our Lenten penance, we pretty much filled our days with mixing. I wanted to do this one, with Temptation as a working title, as the flipside to our Gutbucket Easter Praise mix, though in some cases, the choices were made using the essence of Tex.This one deals with man’s weaknesses on the one hand and then Lucifer himself (or herself) on the other.

But I think I'll shut up now and just let the music speak for itself.

This third installment of Gutbucket Gospel (after GB2 & GB10) finds Brother Tex, with his Roman Catholic heritage, and Brother Doowad, with his pseudo-Catholic wanderings, separately opting to give up visiting the various mix sites during Lent.
So much so that they basically became each other’s own Gutbucket support group, putting together 3 Gutbucket volumes (among other things) in the interim, this first one exploring the joys of theism.
Primarily in the old-timey genre, though with a few choice exceptions.
Here’s hoping this goes down as smooth as boiled eggs on white toast smothered in country ham gravy (a gutbucket Easter tradition).
Happy Easter, one and all, from all of us here in Gutbucket Country.

Hermano Paulson dice: This alt-dj project began with a beautiful Augie Meyers track, then expanded to all sorts of Tex-Mex musical flavors. Soon, we were pulling out obscurities –- mostly Spanish-language tracks – from both sides of the Atlantic. I had the good fortune to have some guidance from Bubba El Rey in Espana. Common themes emerged and with it, the title. Soon, we found one single CD was not enough to contain our concept – conceived as a musical soundtrack for a great party. And like a party, we didn’t quite know when to stop!
Hermano doowad dice: I was going to say the same thing about how when ld answered my Augie with Sir Douglas, I know I had found another mixing brother. In fact, as we were finally wrapped this thing up, I lost track of who picked what and it doesn’t matter. Hope it makes your noche vieja a little more sabrosita. Disk 1 has more cheezy organ than you can shake a stick at, while Disk 2 has more traditional mariachi, end of party drunken sing-a-longs.
The cover art was inspired by my favorite restaurant in Guadalajara for tequila pachanga botanitas, Las Siete Esquinas…

Enormous Mouths: Weird Shit From Inside the Research Kitchen (Celebrity Chefs Edition) – 6 CDs
Brother Strange Loop and Brother Doowad were inspired to put this mix together after seeing The Glitter and Doom Tour stop here in St. Louis last summer. This was an educational exercise for both of us really, to examine the Zappa-Beefheart library and look at the artists who have influenced both of them as well as the artists whom they themselves have influenced. The methodology was classic alt-dj, ping-ponging back and forth, with first a Zappa, then a Beefheart and then a wildcard of our own choosing, so that we would have equal chances at both of the main artists along with input on the wildcards.
Mini-themes eventually developed, from heroin to Jesus to (literal) assholes and others that we don’t even realize. It may not be definitive, but it certainly was an enlightening experience putting this together over the last couple months.
We would also like apologize for the austere artwork, but Brother Strange Loop is soon to be a father and had barely enough time to pong to my ping, let alone put his graphic design skills to work.

Gutbucket 12: Red Hot Gutbucket Duck
From the liner notes to White Country Blues, 1926-1938 A Lighter Shade of Blue:
During the 1920s, it was customary for the major record companies to segregate the kinds of Southern music they recorded; most had a separate numerical series for white “hillbilly” or old-time music, another for “race” or blues music. Yet both the fans and the musicians knew this segregation was artificial at best, and that throughout the South, there was much more give-and-take in the music than some Northerners thought….[Most] never really enjoyed the fruits of their work. Many drifted into obscurity, and out of music entirely; many fell on hard times, and ended up living in tar-paper shacks or on run down farms. Many wound up like “Talking Blues Man” Chris Bouchillon, living in retirement without even a copy of his old records, wondering occasionally if anyone remembered his music. Yet their seeds had been cast, and their music had done its work, and it had helped make millions aware of the plurality of American vernacular music – and along the way had changed the face of music itself.
When Blood Brother Tex asked about putting together a mix of “blues and hillbilly music from the 20s and 30s”, Brother Doowad jumped at the chance. Brother Funky sat this one out, but he’ll be back with Gutbucket 13.

Gutbucket à trois: Gutbucket Butt
Well, we were lucky enough to make it to the Gutbucket family reunion earlier this summer, and it sure was a hoot. Not only was the Stag and Griesedieck flowin' aplenty, but we also got to see a lot of long-lost members of the Gutbucket fam. Great Aunt Irma was there with her famous chili recipe, Uncle Stillwater made it up from his maggot farm in Florida, and Cousin Forklift rolled in on his toilet "pot-rod," with a new sidecar that doubles as a urinal! But the most exciting appearance was from our estranged half-brother Gabe. We even got him to do a little mixin' with us before he abruptly disappeared back into the Great White North.
Brother Doowad says:
This originally started out as a straight Gutbucket release, with Brother Funky and Brother Doowad aiming to present all new artists to the gutbucket genre in the wake of two volumes of gutbuckiest artists. At the same time, Brother Doowad and Brother Gabe were working on a new volume for Los Babymakers, inspired by Gabe’s, ahem, drama (self-induced or otherwise) from last Spring.
Then Gabe came up with his Delta Blues mix and the executive committee of the Gutbucket Brothers voted to bring Brother Gabe aboard as an honorary Gutbucket Brother. This led to basically a half-failed attempt to merge both ideas, with the most respected concept being the introduction of new gutbucket artists. It eventually morphed into side 2, even dipping into as of yet unexplored gutbucket territory: gutbucket garage, further expanding the definition of the same.
However, our Dear Brother Gabe turned out to be a Gutbucket Half-Brother and left us hanging with pick 6 of disk 2, so the Executive Committee of the Gutbucket Brothers voted to complete the mix with the essence of Gabe, as interpreted by Brother Doowad.
Half-Brother Gabe says: (could not be reached for comment)

Greasy Grimey Gopher Guts
The genesis of this volume was an experiment to channel both brothers back towards Gutbucket basics after a year of drifting in different directions, with only one joint venture somewhat related to the gutbucket genre. In this case, each brother set out to make a list of their absolute gutbuckiest artists, with the intent of whittling it down to the greasiest 25 each. After a week or so, Brother Funky had about 40 in his master list; Brother Do-It-All Doowad had about 94 and counting before they called time. When lists were compared, each of the brothers laid claim to their highest ranked 25. Any artist who showed up on both lists (nearly all of them, as to be expected) was assigned to whichever brother ranked them highest.
Brother Funky says: I could have tinkered with my list for months and still easily forgotten some arguably essential artists, or not been completely happy with my rankings. But I'm content enough with my final track selections to live with them.
Brother Doowad says: I did keep Brother Funky abreast of the liberties I was taking as I sequenced the mix (basically by sound, the rankings were quickly set aside) and we agreed to allow some flexibility with regards to replacements, doubling-up picks, and consolidation of artists to contribute to the overall flow. And the trade of Waits for Stones was to gutbucketry what the Rogers Hornsby-Frankie Frisch trade was to depression-era Cardinals baseball. Oh, and Doowadette (not pictured) came up with the title.

Sometimes I Will, Then Again I Think I Won't
Sometimes I Do, Then Again I Think I Don't
It’s hard for me to induct Chuck Berry, because I lifted every lick he ever played!
I nicked the title on the artwork, Keef-style, from XYZ, but opted for the Reelin’ & Rockin’ title for reasons expressed below. Thanks also to Marc for the inspiration on the Mott.
Although it is not alt-dj necessarily, I have decided to post this, my own take on a Chuck Berry Tribute, under the Gutbucket Brothers Brand.
I know that AOTM has just got to have about half a million Chuck mixes, but we have pure motives.
Funky saw Chuck last month at Blueberry Hill here on the Delmar Loop in St. Louis. My dad and a friend and I just went to see the Man, also in the appropriately-named Duck Room, so I feel like shared credit is appropriate in this case.
I would describe the performance as cathartic, to say the least.
I had seen Chuck for the first time when he was still with Johnnie Johnson at the Blue Note in Columbia. I was with the Wad and since we were able to sit in the gimp section, we were right up front. Chuck even fired off a tune pointing his axe at Steve.
But he was never so animated as he was this past Friday night.
Between the duckwalk, the clowning, the solos, the broken strings, his son Charles Berry Jr. putting in some nice fills for the old man, ending it with a 10 minute jam on a ribald version of Reelin' & Rockin' that culminated with 40 gals all colors, ages, shapes and sizes (though befitting Chuck, there were a majority of young white women) boogieing on stage for him. As the chickadees cleared out of the way, Chuck moseyed off stage, still jamming, to finish his solo out in a chair in his dressing room.
Beautiful Delilah, indeed!
After Chuck was gone, his son stepped up to thank the crowd and the band. A guy yelled out “He’s the Real King” and Charles nodded in agreement.
I agree as well, but Promised Land is the perfect melding of the minds with Elvis’ cover here, which is not only the best-realized Chuck cover, but the most powerful Elvis song, period (to quote Rafael Palmiero and IMnotsoHO).
I also couldn’t help adding a couple redneck flourishes and other doowad touches.

Gutbucket Gospel
Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain, that another gutbucket is born!
Funky says: Thanks to doowad for taking some time out of, uh...making mixes to do another alt mix with me, and for suggesting we post under the "Gutbucket Brothers" moniker.
Doowad says: As easy as can be, we decided within the gutbucket guidelines there could be no limit on Tom, Bob or Steve, and plenty of John & Johnny to boot. Some of these got a little too smooth for gutbucket purity in the strictest sense, but in the end, I think the title was well-earned. It is now officially a gutbucket tradition to have Bob-Todd-Warren-Elvis, two disks in is enough of a tradition for me!
